Borderline Cases: Pictures That Enlighten and Words That Decieve
The project to me was learning about the struggles families and children take when trying to cross the border illegally. When I was looking at the pictures of children in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, it hurt because we have it easy in America and we don't go through the same experiences they do in Mexico so seeing those pictures told me about what I don't live and everything I have avoided by living in the United States and being a US citizen. The purpose of the project was to create an art piece that answered one of the essential questions that we chose. Our art piece had to contain different elements that were taught to us from Mr. Joshua, the art teacher and we had to explain in our Artist Statement how it connected to the essential question that was posed.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
1. Why do people immigrate to other countries?
2. What are the challenges they might face when entering a new country?
3. What is the difference between acculturation and assimilation?
4. What things are essential or necessary to achieve success in the US?
5. Is there an American dream? Is it for everyone?

Project Reflection:
Overall, I really loved our final artwork and simulation because I was able to see families' reactions on how to find "red flags" in our articles and for them to see the hard work we put into our art pieces. From my point of view as a photographer, I feel like overall, it went really well and I was proud of our finished exhibition and how it came together.
