The Power Within Reading Series: September 12th - December 7th
The Power Within project is a narrative-driven project, one where we are tasked to find where our power comes from based on a memory or past experience. There was one goal in this project: to be emotionally honest. Working alongside So Say We All, a non-profit organization that works with the community to highlight stories, we had various writing workshops and performance examples, in order to make our stories as vulnerable and engaging as possible.
Most of our stories are true and honest. Every student was tasked to write about something that has impacted them greatly, something that they feel has given them power. It was not easy writing these narratives, especially since our first starts were messy, we didn't really know where to take our narratives. Through the process, we were able to open ourselves up to our classmates and teachers, showing our vulnerability as we wrote these narratives, as we talked about difficult moments in our lives.
By telling our story, we were able to open up and highlight the parts of ourselves that is sometimes overlooked, and ignored. Not only did this give us power as teenagers, but it was able to bring the attention of our families and community about the importance of getting to know your student or child. As teenagers, we are overlooked, or ridiculed for wanting to express our opinions, and this is seen a lot in the media.
The Power Within Project really brought and highlighted the real truth behind teenagers. The kids who are trying to get by, the kids who go through a lot more than you think. The real us.
Now, sit back, and listen to my story. The one that makes me powerful.
